thing in hardware stores up to the mid '60s.

civilized world. Who could have guessed that the mighty ' merica would
stay so backwards.

I live in a dual world. All of my water people are metric, as is most
"science" and I still have to communicate with the rest of the world
so I am always making the conversions in my head. Usually for those
purposes I can just round things off.

It didn't just fizzle out. There was a federal mandate back in the
'70s or thereabouts to start gradually converting the US to the metric
system. All of the reasons were good. As soon as the first highway
signs started showing up with both miles and kilometers, there was a
huge hue and cry from middle america that the whole thing was a
communistic global plot to overthrow all that was good and holy. It
was almost as emotional as some of the religious issues these days.

(One of our guys was a Scotsman and he always used his favorite 2 BA
