We went to DC regularly, often to entertain house guests and/or relatives who had never been there. This was in 1975-1977. Never felt unsafe although there were sections of the city surrounding the Capital area that were "rough". Haven't been back since other than some business trips to the Pentagon and one weekend for Rolling Thunder. had never been there. |

Whenever we have guests who've not seen the sights in DC, we always start with a visit at night. The Capitol, monuments, White House, etc, are nicely very nicely lit up. The Lincoln Memorial, Korean War Memorial and Vietnam Memorial are especially beautiful at night. And, parking is readily available to visit those. No, I wouldn't want to take a walk through the Logan Circle, Columbia Heights, or Trinidad neighborhoods. A quick look at DC homicides might show why. Of course, I don't have the courage Harry thinks he has. -- Ban idiots, not guns! |

That whole Federal Triangle area and south is well patrolled and generally safe. That is where all of the monuments are anyway and very pleasant on a warm evening. On cold nights, the steam grates tend to collect homeless people. |

My wife is in DC most days of the work week and attends meetings all over the city, and I'm in DC at least twice a week, and because of the nature of the business of one of my clients (low income housing construction), I often drive or Metro to some "rough" neighborhoods. In all the years I have been doing this - in fact - in all the years I've been working, attending functions, going to museums, shows, restaurants in DC - I've never had the slightest problem. Once I "got a little lost" driving home from an event in Anacostia at night, and I stopped at a convenience store for directions. There were a lot of guys "hanging out" in front of the place, and I simply said "Hi Guys" going in while my wife sat in the car. No problems. The only "thug" I've encountered in this area was over in Fairfax County, Virginia. |
