Nice mountain getaway...
If you're looking for a great place in the NC mountains to go, try the Old Edwards Inn & Spa in Highlands, NC. My wife and I just got back from a weekend there, and it's our new favorite place in that setting, bumping the Grove Park Inn out of top spot.

Based on the website I don't think this is the kind of place you go to in order to go camping. That resort looks like it was right in town, be it a small one. You can go a mile or two in any direction and be out in the woods. The trick is to find forest service land so you are not stumbling onto someone's still and being shot ;-) We usually start right out by looking at the USFS web site when we are deciding what area we want to visit. For us those tend to be more attractive than the "parks". They usually have fire roads you can explore and lots of good places to take a walk. That is true in just about every state we have visited. There also seems to be a lot of primitive camping on those lands. Basically, if you don't bring it, don't expect it to be there. |

I remember the movie last of the Mohicans, filmed near Ashland. Looked like beautiful country. That whole Smokey/Blue Ridge area is very similar, all the way from Georgia up to West Virginia. You pretty much have to be a botanist to tell the difference in the vegetation. It is really nice up there. That was a great motorcycle ride from DC up into the GW forest. If I was rich, I would have one of those "cabins" on the side of a mountain to go to in the summer. I actually liked the North Carolina area the best of the three. It was close to Nentahala (about 10 miles east). way back in the sticks. |

No, but that would have been fun. My BIL and I talked about it. That might be a spring/summer trip next year. Play golf while the girls are at the spa! |

That used to be a fun ride, but now the traffic is so miserable that the joy is gone. The Skyline Drive would be a nice ride if they'd raise the speed limit by about 20mph. That 35mph limit is no fun, and it's enforced. The Blue Ridge Parkway is a fun ride. The speed limit is 45, but the cops will let you go 10 over with no trouble. -- Ban idiots, not guns! They did the Skyline Drive and said it took 4 hours to go 60 miles. In nice summer weather those mountain roads can get really busy. We were lucky... we left Highlands about 9:30 Sunday morning. Taking rt 28 down into SC there's about 30 miles of switchback mountain roads, and I had zero traffic. I was very happy with the A6's ability on those roads. Nothing like my old Boxster, but still fun. |

That may involve dirt roads but they are the most fun anyway. Our rentacars always need a good scrubbing when we turn them in. I actually had to wash the Suburban we had in the Dakota because it got too dirty for me ... and I don't even wash my car. |
