In my siytuation it was the alternator causing the noise and after
awhile I would get the black belt dust allo over the motor. The cure
was to replace the alternator.

Did you notice if the alternate pulley turned freely by hand when the pulley
was removed with no noticable noise/binding? If so, they you just reduced my
confidence that I an on the right track. Oh well, I will know soon enough.
It was time to change the impeller anyway.
