Boat theft tip...

Some dealer in Fla had a 33ft center console sport fisher stolen yesterday. Brand new boat, twin Evinrudes, trailer and delivery truck. It's probably in Mexico now, but someone left a general post about a possible means of theft tracking and recovery. I thought it was worth sharing. The concept is really simple and cheap too.

"Here is a great idea for all you dealers. Or just boat owners in general. Go to petco they sell dog collars there with GPS and batterys like in a watch which last awhile. The collar is perfect to wrap around in an inconspicuous place and there ya have it. They can change or disconnect anything they like and you still can track it on GPS"

Interesting idea. Does the collar uplink to a satellite or does it
depend on the cellular network? A boat like that can be offshore and
out of cell phone range in no time at all.

Boat theft of high performance center consoles is rampant in south
Florida and the Bahamas. They are highly prized by smugglers and
sometimes get stripped of engines and electronics.

It's easy to understand why a guy with all of your health issues would
have no interest in a boat like that, even assuming you could afford
to run it.

I really don't know if it would effectively work or not, but it looks good on paper...

I suppose they have cell phone models that require an account and work
anywhere a cell phone works but the ones we were looking at were stand
alone transmitters and were only good for about a half mile if the
stars were lined up and everything was perfect.

What you really need is a concealed device that uplinks to a
satellite.

Here's one that I just found on Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/SPOT-Trace-Anti-Theft-Tracking-Device/dp/B00JB6Q9LS

The price is right and the reviews are favorable. In addition to the
purchase price it also costs about $100/year to keep an account going.

Wayne that looks a bit better than a dog collar. The 'collar' concept is a good idea but thought there could be something more advanced out there.

Something concealed with a good battery life. And- if you can afford the boat you can afford the security...

I have a walk I make, on my path is a large fenced field, recently
there were 4 boats on trailers in the lot. Sticking up above the fence,
mounted on a boat I couldn't see, were 3-300hp Mercury outboards. I
thought, they should at least throw a blanket over that advertisement.
Three days later, I made the same walk, that boat and motors was gone.
It has been a month and it has not returned, I wonder?
