A new bill introduced in the Texas state legislature makes it illegal
for average citizens to record police officers within a certain area.
House Bill 2918, which was introduced by Dallas Rep. Jason Villalba, a
Republican, would make such an act a Class A misdemeanor.

If passed, average citizens would have to be 25 feet away from a police
officer when recording and Texans carrying a handgun would have to be
100 feet away when recording. In a tweet, Villalba wrote, “To anyone who
doesn’t like HB 2918 - Deal with it. I stand with cops who keep my
family safe. If you don’t like it - vote me out of office.�

That tweet was subsequently deleted and replaced with another one
reading, “HB 2918 is meant to protect officers, NOT restrict the ability
to keep them accountable. It DOES NOT prohibit filming."
