Besides, few South Carolinians go to Myrtle Beach. Way too many tourists, and there are better beaches in SC to visit. We just don't advertise them.

Speaking of SC, I just did a quickie calculation of what my state income tax would be down there. It's right at $3000 more than I pay here!

I'll have to look at property taxes. My wife thinks Charleston might be nice. What do you think? Is the humidity atrocious?

If you went to Florida there would be no income tax at all and I am
not sure how property taxes compare. On a $200k (appraised value)
home, the tax is $1687 with the homestead adjustment.. These
appraisals are intentionally low so they do not have to adjust therm
when we have a housing slump like they did a few years ago.

Here, on a $615K (appraised value) home, the taxes are $7285.

Ouch. ~500K, $2200 here.

And that's SC, right? So, I'd lose some in income tax, but could make it up in
property tax. That's not so bad. NC is still about $7500 better, depending on
property tax. And I've heard the property tax is pretty small there.

Some, perhaps all, counties in SC have a personal property tax on
things like boats and cars. We got into a monumental legal hassel one
year when Charleston County thought we owed property tax on our boat.
They were threatening to have USCG seize the boat and auction it off
until I got my son the lawyer involved. The whole claim was bogus of
course and was apparently triggered by a two day stay at the
Charleston City Marina. We like Charleston but I will never again
take the boat into a marina there.

I traded in the Proline in Essex County at a Key West dealer. Almost a year later, I
tried to get tags for my truck. The computer wouldn't let me. I called the DMV folks
who told me that Essex County had put a stop on DMV transactions because I hadn't
paid the property tax on my boat. It took several phone calls and letters to get my
name disassociated from that damn boat.

I know what you mean.
