Engangered indeed:
http://www.abc-7.com/story/28021781/...owd-out-humans Classifying manatees as an endangered species has got to be one of the stupidest things that Federal Fish and Wildlife has ever done. It's a classic case of government overreach from an ageny co-opted by pressure groups. |

The last line of the seal part of the story may be a more significant reason to keep swimmer out of Crystal River than just bothering the manatees. I bet the fecal coliform numbers are in the high 3 digits. A manatee ****s about 10 pounds a day. We have a friend in LaJolla and she is losing her business over seagull ****, the other problem the LaJolla government will not do anything about. They have taken over the business district and nobody will let anyone to do anything to run them off. Prime commercial property is now a guano plantation. They are a protected species. I think federal. |

Yup somewhere between eagle and baby seal anyway. After you take that pretty white fur, it would be a shame to waste the meat. ;-) Seriously, the Seminoles and Calusa ate the Manatees and I imagine that, during the depression they were a prime source of protein but now they are just pests in a lot of places. I will say the folks in Crystal River are on more shaky ground complaining than the people near power plants that are now under court order to artificially heat the water in excess of the normal waste heat from the generation of power. Screw global warming, we need to save the manatee ... huh? When you draw manatees to a power plant intentionally and that power plant is on the main east west route across Florida, aren't you just asking them to be hit by boats? It would be like putting piles of corn and a salt lick in the median of I-75 and then wringing your hands because so many deer are being killed. I'd say thats a pretty good analogy... |

Yeah Bill. Sea cow is right. Might be kind of blubbery but would be nice to try a steak.
