I'm guessing Vietnamese. Looks like some of the signs over the
'establishments' in Saigon.

My wife an I watched a movie on Netflix the other night, 'Rescue Dawn'

which I noticed that the 'enemy' fighters were carrying, in some
instances, Mosin Nagant 91/30s.

Mosin Nagant should win a couple Oscars.

I'm still trying to figure out the "attraction" of those rifles. They're
not pretty. Some of them still shoot well, and I suppose the Russian ammo
is cheap. But they're four feet long, and heavy. Oh, well, there's a cover for every pot.

Heavy big bore rifles are more fun to shoot than lightweight rifles. As
long as you do not have to carry them in battle.

Yup. That's the way I feel about the AR-15 style weapons. The Mosin Nagant is a fun beast to shoot.
The M-16 was like shooting the Fanner 50, or some other toy gun made by Mattel. If I had a .223
rifle, it would be something like this:

I satisfied my desire for an "old fashioned" rifle with my lever action
Win '92 clone, though I wouldn't mind having a modern bolt action rifle
or, my sentimental favorite, a "Swede" in 6.55 as I have previously
mentioned. I'm just not a fan of very long, very heavy rifles.

I like the ARs because they're easy to break down and clean and modify,
and if you keep them clean and lubed, very reliable, plus, the .223
round, while loud, is not difficult to control and place. I'm shooting
1-1/2" to 2" groups at 100 yards with "El Cheapo" brass plinking ammo. I
should buy a box of .223 "premium" ammo next time I am at Bass Pro and
see what it does when I pull the trigger.

I can see that, but at the moment, I'm pretty much limited to 100 yards
of outdoor shooting space, and when I hit a two liter soda bottle or
gong with my .223 or .357 mag rifle ammo, the bottle explodes and the
gong goes..."gong"! I suppose a bigger bore rifle would make a bigger
"gong" sound. But with the weight of those bigger rifles, I'd probably
want to use a shooting bag or steel rest. I can't use a bayonet, either,
because when I shaved down the gas block on my AR, I shaved off the
bayonet attachment point. Smacking a bayonet into a two liter sodapop
bottle might be fun. :)

If I have to go to battle, carrying an extra 5# means a lot. I was in the
military. Did not go to the shooting part of the war, but during training
we marched. A whole bunch of marching. And the M16 style weapon is a
great design for jungle and urban warfare. During WW2 a Thomson sub
machine gun was much better for clearing a room than a long gun, especially
if it was like the Germans who used bolt action rifles.

My AR-15 .223/5.56, a genuine Colt with a heavy barrel, weighs a hair
over seven pounds. I have a .22LR AR that weighs about five pounds and a
Winchester 1892 clone, a real clone, that weighs under six pounds. I
wouldn't want to lug around a rifle that weighs more than the ones I
have. A few of my friends have AR-15s that weigh less than mine, maybe a
pound less, and they are happy with that weight. Lighter rifles are
easier to shoot offhand while standing up.

If you need a rifle for military use that packs a heavier punch, you can
always call up the shooter with the AR-10.

After I finish up the rebuild of my Ruger Mark III pistol, I think I
might start building an AR-15 in .300 blackout with a side charging
handle. I helped a friend build a "standard" .300 blackout a few months
ago, and that rifle is performing well.

Other that dropping the cylinder out, there is not much to take apart
unless you want to break something ;-)
I suppose you can take the grips and side plate off.

There's a lot of stuff out there on the MN's. I had a hard time with this one though. I need some
liberal arts guy to help me out.

I'm guessing Vietnamese. Looks like some of the signs over the 'establishments' in Saigon.

My wife an I watched a movie on Netflix the other night, 'Rescue Dawn' (great movie, BTW), during
which I noticed that the 'enemy' fighters were carrying, in some instances, Mosin Nagant 91/30s.

Check out this site, John...

Mosin Nagant should win a couple Oscars.

I'm still trying to figure out the "attraction" of those rifles. They're
not pretty. Some of them still shoot well, and I suppose the Russian
ammo is cheap. But they're four feet long, and heavy. Oh, well, there's
a cover for every pot.

Yup. That's the way I feel about the AR-15 style weapons. The Mosin Nagant is a fun beast to shoot.
The M-16 was like shooting the Fanner 50, or some other toy gun made by Mattel. If I had a .223
rifle, it would be something like this:

Different strokes, etc.

I have three .223 rifles. A pre-ban Colt AR-15 (safe queen), a Windham
Weaponry AR-15 (for target shooting), and a Ruger Hawkeye 17107 bolt
action (for hunting). They all serve a different purpose.
