If I had a .223 rifle, it would be something like this: http://img326.imageshack.us/img326/3...23rifle7lm.jpg Different strokes, etc. I satisfied my desire for an "old fashioned" rifle with my lever action Win '92 clone, though I wouldn't mind having a modern bolt action rifle or, my sentimental favorite, a "Swede" in 6.55 as I have previously mentioned. I'm just not a fan of very long, very heavy rifles. I like the ARs because they're easy to break down and clean and modify, and if you keep them clean and lubed, very reliable, plus, the .223 round, while loud, is not difficult to control and place. I'm shooting 1-1/2" to 2" groups at 100 yards with "El Cheapo" brass plinking ammo. I should buy a box of .223 "premium" ammo next time I am at Bass Pro and see what it does when I pull the trigger. -- Proud to be a Liberal. |

Heavy big bore rifles are more fun to shoot than lightweight rifles. As long as you do not have to carry them in battle. I can see that, but at the moment, I'm pretty much limited to 100 yards of outdoor shooting space, and when I hit a two liter soda bottle or gong with my .223 or .357 mag rifle ammo, the bottle explodes and the gong goes..."gong"! I suppose a bigger bore rifle would make a bigger "gong" sound. But with the weight of those bigger rifles, I'd probably want to use a shooting bag or steel rest. I can't use a bayonet, either, because when I shaved down the gas block on my AR, I shaved off the bayonet attachment point. Smacking a bayonet into a two liter sodapop bottle might be fun. :) -- Proud to be a Liberal. |

Check out this site, John... http://www.imfdb.org/wiki/Main_Page Mosin Nagant should win a couple Oscars. I'm still trying to figure out the "attraction" of those rifles. They're not pretty. Some of them still shoot well, and I suppose the Russian ammo is cheap. But they're four feet long, and heavy. Oh, well, there's a cover for every pot. Heavy big bore rifles are more fun to shoot than lightweight rifles. As long as you do not have to carry them in battle. Yeah, cause some guns are actually "fun" to carry into battle! snerk Did someone say that? Yes, well, no. Well sorta' but I was only kidding with him... Sorry, forgot the smiley after the snerk. |

During WW2 a Thomson sub machine gun was much better for clearing a room than a long gun, especially if it was like the Germans who used bolt action rifles. My AR-15 .223/5.56, a genuine Colt with a heavy barrel, weighs a hair over seven pounds. I have a .22LR AR that weighs about five pounds and a Winchester 1892 clone, a real clone, that weighs under six pounds. I wouldn't want to lug around a rifle that weighs more than the ones I have. A few of my friends have AR-15s that weigh less than mine, maybe a pound less, and they are happy with that weight. Lighter rifles are easier to shoot offhand while standing up. If you need a rifle for military use that packs a heavier punch, you can always call up the shooter with the AR-10. After I finish up the rebuild of my Ruger Mark III pistol, I think I might start building an AR-15 in .300 blackout with a side charging handle. I helped a friend build a "standard" .300 blackout a few months ago, and that rifle is performing well. |

:) You've been watching too many YouTube videos. |

I have an AK (actually two - one rifle and one pistol) but that is just part of my collection - for shooting that type of weapon I prefer the AR platform. It's easy to hold on target and has a variety of accessories and optics that work well with it. I'm a Ruger fan - I have 9 of their firearms. One is the ..223 bolt action. The Mini 14 is a classic but it's not on my short list for my collection. Firearms are about personal preference. |
