Well, its nice that you have the generator as a backup. I use my Honda EU2000i whenever my power goes out. It will run what I need to keep running. Living in a condo so no way to put up a permanent generator. If I ever get another house I will get a fixed permanent generator.

That will be my next generator, even though I live in a house. I may
go for the 'sister' also. Then I could put the trailer in the drive
and have enough power to live for months if need be.

Well Don, that's an idea too, but the thread was about power outages.
I can understand how you could be a bit confused.

If you have a widespread outage, fuel supply becomes an issue very
quickly. We were running on a small Honda generator for 10 days after
hurricane Charlie in 2004, sharing power with a neighbor. He and I
were taking turns driving 40 miles round trip every night to find gas
stations that could still pump fuel. A large underground propane tank
is probably the best bet for most homeowners.

You're right, of course. We've been very lucky here, and I thank my
lucky stars for Dominion Power. We've been here close to 25 years and
I don't think our power has ever been out for more than 4-6 hours. And
that happened only when an underground (in my front yard) transformer
blew. I thought it was a 105mm round going off.

That trailer would be cheaper than sending him to an "Assisted Living

Automatic transfer switch and start-up, Bilious. If the utility power
goes out for more than a short interval, the generator takes over and
when the utility power comes back on, the generator shuts itself down.
Surely such setups exist out there on the left coast.

I think he's questioning your need for such an elaborate generator

We have underground utils on our street, but the larger streets coming
from the power company substations have power poles and wires and
usually in a storm a tree or a tree limb will knock down wires. The
power company doesn't do enough to trim down trees and branches close to
its wires. $$$.

Well, its nice that you have the generator as a backup. I use my
Honda
EU2000i whenever my power goes out. It will run what I need to keep
running. Living in a condo so no way to put up a permanent
generator. If
I ever get another house I will get a fixed permanent generator.

Power was out for an hour...I didn't investigate but I suspect tree
limbs
falling on a power line.

An hour and you needed a generator?

Automatic transfer switch and start-up, Bilious. If the utility power
goes out for more than a short interval, the generator takes over and
when the utility power comes back on, the generator shuts itself down.
Surely such setups exist out there on the left coast.

Hell, we rarely lose power where I live. Underground utilities, and no
friggen snow. Last big power outage was a few years ago. Last time we
had
big rains and the transformer at the bottom of the hill blew.

We have underground utils on our street, but the larger streets coming
from the power company substations have power poles and wires and
usually in a storm a tree or a tree limb will knock down wires. The
power company doesn't do enough to trim down trees and branches close to
its wires. $$$.

If I were you,I'd stop paying my electric bill until they started
properly maintaining their right of way.

Don't give him any more non-payment ideas. Besides, the electric bill
is probably in the name of the home owner.

Good advice.

That is penny wise and pound foolish.
FPL is very aggressive with tree trimming and we seldom ever have
power outages.
I do understand the tree huggers up there do not understand the
meaning of the right of way and they think they own the trees all the
way to the curb. I was up there a few years ago after one of your
storms and I saw trees on power lines all the way from the Blue Ridge
to southern Md.

I've had a couple of conversations with the local util company about
that, and I've been told several times it is the cost of the extensive
trimming that is needed on an on-going basis. This isn't your part of
Florida with your funky and mostly relatively little trees.
