Our eight "post holes" for our deck are about 22-24"" in diameter (for
sonotubes) and 48" deep, and they have rebar framework inside the poured
concrete. Why anyone would want to dig those by hand and mix up concrete
in a wheelbarrow is beyond me. The guy we hired used a PTO post hole
digger of the right diameter and got the holes done, level and clean, in
short order, assembled the rebar and then, after the inspector was
through, came back and poured the concrete.

Jesus, are you landing airplanes on that deck?

Most decks use 12" or smaller piers and even in Florida with a tougher
than IRC code, an 18" pier is all you need for most load bearing
structures.
The pier base I put in to carry the whole corner of my addition is
about that size but it is larger than the engineer specified. That is
carrying a T shaped poured beam that is 10' in one direction and 15 in
the other.

The concrete post on the right side carries that beam and the roof.

I dug the hole myself but the concrete came in on a truck, part of a
20 yard pour.

The guy who did the holes and rebar and concrete had a machine in our
area with that sized "bit" on it the day his operator drilled. Funny
thing, the country inspector came by to look at the holes when the rebar
was done and asked if we were planning to land a helicopter on the deck.
A 1000 years from now, aliens will land here, find the piers, and wonder
what religious ceremonies took place on the site. :) Everything else,
of course, will be long gone.

I guess inspectors tend to think alike ;-)

Guys and their tools...you got a big one, you use it. :)
