Ours gets ammo every day and puts it out at 7:00. I could order it online if I really wanted it
badly. But, there's no rush.

Surely you wouldn't call the accumulation of a measly 5000 rounds 'hoarding'!

As it was all purchased long before you right-wing trashmeisters began
hoarding, it wasn't and isn't hoarding. I paid less than $5 for a box of
100 rounds. I see them selling for $20 to $30 for the same box. I'll be
glad to sell a few boxes to you at, say, $50 a box.

When I started shooting 9 mm, it was about $7.00 for a box of 50 count
target ammo. Maybe $8.00. 40S&W was a little more. .357 MAG was about
$10. 100 .22LR Mini-Mags were about $4

Why reload if you "shoot little"?

I use to shoot a lot. And I remember $0.50 a box of 50 22lr.

I tend to agree but back in the olden days people reloaded because
there was not much in high performance ammo loaded commercially. Now
that is not really an issue in the popular calibers.
You can still load a performance cartridge for about 50 cents less
than a commercially loaded one.
It still might make sense in rifle calibers too.

Other than that, reloading is a way to shoot relatively cheap if your
time is worth less to you than your money and you don't mind cast
bullets.

Keep in mind that 'when I started shooting', for someone with Krause's
knowledge and experience, was
probably about 45 years ago. Ammo was a bit cheaper then.

A box of .38 or .45 was around $6.95 in the late 60s, early 70s when I
was shooting a lot. That was the retail price. I got a much better
deal at the distributor in Lanham when I was buying a pallet of
shotgun shells for the skeet league but I needed to buy a case.
I split a case of .45 a few times. I seem to remember that was 20
boxes.
The real deal was .22rf by the case (20 bricks). They were less than a
penny a round. We split a case between 4 of us and I bet some of the
guys still have some ;-)


I'll have at least six 50-round boxes of .357 MAG ammo here by the
beginning of the week, and I'm still shopping for a few more boxes of .38
Special. I don't like the prices, but if you shop a handful of mail order
sites/spiders, you at least can find the lowest of the rip-off prices.
I'm not a hoarder, so that amount will do for a while.

I did buy a lot of .22LR CCI Mini-Mags when they were cheap. In addition
to what was in my ammo box, I found six mini-cartons in the basement, so
I probably have around 5,000 rounds of decent quality
.22LR ammo on hand.

Now that there are signs of the weather warming up, I'm planning a trip
out to the river to shoot up empty cans, bottles, and zombies.

Even when I shot a lot, a shot little 357 MAG Ammo. Mostly .38 spl as they
are a lot more comfortable to shoot. In the 60-70s I shot a lot of trap,
so reloaded a lot of 12 and 20 gauge. Still have some of those reloads.
Still a lot of AA empty hulls.

That's a thought. :-) I actually buy most of my ammo on the
internet however. It's more convenient and I get what i'm looking
for.
