Default rebuild kit for marine starter?

I think what makes a marine starter a marine starter is the fact that it is
sealed more so than a auto starter. This is done to keep the arcing of the
brushes to the commutater away from any gasoline fumes. You may know that
gasoline fumes are heavier than air and will sink to the lowest point in
the bilge area. That is where the starter is usually near. Mark the case
before you seperate the halves. Check the condition of the bushings and/or
bearings.....if they are not worn or scored just put some waterproof grease

For high humidityy, moisture and water resistance I use a slight dab of "Anti Sieze"

Look at the
commutator. That is the strips of copper that the brushes ride on. If it is
not deeply cut, take fine sand paper, not emery cloth, and polish the
copper. Emery cloth might leave small bits of grit embedded in the copper
that will quickly eat the brushes.

This is the best stuff I've found---

3M(tm) Utility Cloth Roll 211K
