Y'know it seems like a lot of money for what you get, but it's really inexpensive in the long run. AND you can leave them as a permanent fixture to the carburetor instead of installing them every time YOu used them. They just make synchronizing the carbs that much easier...means I'll do it more often. === Never having done this, I'm trying to understand the process. Do you attach vacuuum gage(s) to the adapters and then tune for equal vacuum on all carbs? |

Do you attach vacuuum gage(s) to the adapters and then tune for equal vacuum on all carbs? Carb Stix are tubes with mercury in the bottom. The tubes are connected to the intake manifolds between the carbs and the cylinders. As the rpm in a cylinder increases, the mercury is sucked further up each tube. When the engine is idling, the mercury should be sucked up to an equal level for both cylinders. If not, then an adjustment is needed to the carb. When the throttle is opened, if the cables are adjusted properly, both columns of mercury will move together. If one cable pulls the slide before the other, then the mercury for that cylinder will drop quickly as the other side rises quickly. An adjustment to the cable is needed. The side in which the mercury immediately drops has a 'too tight' cable, which must be loosened. When both cables are acting the same on each carb, the mercury columns will react identically to the opening of the throttle. I didn't mention adjusting the mixture for each carb, but the sticks can be used for that also. This is a Carb Stix set. The vial at the bottom holds the mercury. A hard blip of the throttle can suck the mercury into the cylinder, so a bit of care is needed. http://www.fjrtech.net/images/engine/carb-stix.jpg Here is a pic of intake manifolds where someone is making a homemade adapter for the CarbStix tubes. If I'd not found the ones I mentioned, that would have been my next step. |
