" Deliberate acts of violence are not common in baseball or basketball or soccer (at least not by the players)." You don't get much more deliberate than that crash at home plate. The whole intent is to hit the catcher hard enough to make him drop the ball. The catcher does wear protective gear but it really just protects him from a pitched ball, not a 250 pound, roided up player, coming in at 30 feet per second. Yeah, but every hit in football is designed to make someone drop the ball or get hurt... every single one. Every time a guy blocks on the line, he tries to shove a thumb in an eye, or an elbow to the kidney, twist a leg while in the pile, etc..... Your pads don't help much when you are in a pile and someone grabs your leg and tries to twist it off while getting up... Granted, in baseball there is some contact, what, three times a game? In football there are probably 40 hits, each and every play, designed to hurt the other guy and put him out of the game... I honestly don't believe that. Some fraction of the players intend to hurt someone, but I believe most players intend to do their job - protect the quarterback, rush the quarterback, run the ball, tackle the ball carrier, catch the ball, stop the catch, etc., etc. Sorry, we're going to have to disagree on that one. John H. -- Hope you're having a great day! Well, when your grandkids get to playing football, ask them... They've played for the past several years. None have been hurt. Now they're into lacrosse and/or soccer. They've all decided they're not big enough for football. Size matters, but not in the ability to hurt or maim - it's in the ability to block or rush. Football is not nearly as 'dirty' as you and Harry are making it out to be, in my opinion. John H. -- Hope you're having a great day! Yeah, I guess cause there is definately no real incentive for College or Pro Players in the game like LaCross with all the fame and fortune associated with LaCross, or even a couple Soccer players at any given time in history ![]() Fair enough! And I won't even try to be sarcastic. However, I don't understand your sentence. Maybe you were just typing real fast. John H. -- Hope you're having a great day! |
