I believe I explained last summer that I found the nose part of my boat hook (orange tip) would get jammed as I placed the hook part around the horn of small cleats on the launch rafts, docks etc and pulled myself closer..which changed the angle of the hook to dock and boat.
I really like using the gaff.. no jamb problems.

If this doesn't make things clearer, you two are on your own.

Your thoughtfulness is appreciated. I'd still use the boat hook for hooking a dog's collar - just in
case I missed. But, I'm probably a lot older than you and don't have the quick reflexes that you do.
I'm sure you can keep that hook from getting caught in the dog's fur, ear, or eye.

No not really. Before you were talking about dogs, now its cleats. I
don't see any similarity between the two.
BTW If you can't find a use for the pointy part of your boat hook, you
can always cut it off. Although some find it useful for laying the eye
of a dockline over a cleat, or pushing away from a dock or boat or a rock.
Just sayin.

You need the brush that screws on the end of your boat hook, or cut off the
threaded portion. Maybe are bollards are bigger than your cleats as I have
no problem with my boat hook, which looks really similar, except the orange
cap has not been on it in years.

Very good. If I could reach out, I'd put a gold star smack in the middle
of your forehead.
Now which of those tools did you use to pick up that furry little bundle
of joy.

If it were my dog, I'd never use the gaff on the left, but the boat hook on the right.

But hey, it's your dog. Do whatever you think's right.

Lord help us.
Y'all do see that the gaff has what the manufacturer calls a "bull nose.
I use the gaff to hook the sewn on handle on top of his PFD and help him get up on the somewhat slippery plastic swim platform.

No wonder y'all gave up on boating.

You know best! It's your dog, and it's your gaff. Who the hell are Hank or I to question it? Go for
it!
