In the simplest terms welfare policies and the tax code reward single
parents and discourage marriage. Single mothers are punished for
having a man in the house.
The other problem is the "all or nothing" approach to welfare. It
discourages people from working.

The "war on poverty" was a huge failure. There are more people in
poverty than there were in the early 60s and some have a couple of
generations of their family who have never had meaningful employment..

That is not true, per capita.

The liberal democrats can continue to trash the idea of family values
but the lack of them is getting to be the biggest single problem in
the country . Crime, drug abuse, poverty and lack of education can all
be traced back to the lack of family structure.

It's always fun to read the postings of conservatives on the subject of
family values when the party of those conservatives votes to cut food
stamps for hungry children, votes to keep poor people away from decent
health care, votes to discriminate against gays, votes to take the vote
away from the poor, people of color, students, and the elderly. Family
values and today's Republican Party are polar opposites.

Don't try to paint everyone with the same brush

The Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives and in state
legislatures where possible voted almost unananimously to do what I have stated.

And the present Democrat leaders are trying to keep family values away from
a large group. Replacing it with nanny state, getting votes.

Just what "family values" are the Democrats trying to keep away?

A loving, supportive family group.

How?

More pay for single parent. More pay for more kids. Nothing supporting a
real family structure.

It is ironic that the same chart Kevin posts to tell us how successful
the war on poverty is was used to prove the opposite on the Wiki page.

The poverty rate was falling before we declared war on it and after
the government tried to "fix" it, the poverty rate has been stagnant
for almost a half century.in spite of throwing the best part of a
trillion dollars at it .

The welfare policies have proved they are only capable of keeping
10-15% of people in inescapable poverty. It certainly is not showing
progress.

I don't know about Kevin, but where did I EVER say that the war on
poverty was or is successful?? All I said was that your position that
poverty per capita was greater in the '60's than it is now was
horse****, and it is.

Look at your graph. Poverty has hovered between 10 and 15 percent for
the last 45 years.
You call that success?

Again, I never, EVER said that the war on poverty was a success or not a
success for that matter. What I said was that your position that poverty
was worse in the '60's than it is now was not true. And it's not. Where
does this **** that I think the war on poverty is and was a success come
from??? Are you channeling Scotty's jawbone?

I'm not aware of any Democratic initiatives that would interfere with
that value. In fact, the Democrats are far more family friendly than
today's Republicans.

When you view family values as liberal indoctrination at school, letting children kock each
other up and then solving the problem at the pharmacy and with Mayors, Governors and
Representatives being such good model citizens with their grabbing, ****ing and picture
taking.

If you think that is the case, then you and the rest of the Republicans
should be working to get rid of regulations that penalize single mothers
for having a "man in the house."

If you want more impoverished single mothers to hold down jobs, then we
will need to increase the minimum wage substantially and find a way to
provide high-quality daycare for the children left at home.

As for marriage, my understanding is that younger women of all
educational and employment levels are far less interested in that form
of relationship than the women of previous generations, and it has
nothing to do with the tax code. I know lots of couples in their 40s who
have no desire to marry their partners or anyone else, and that includes
the women as well as the men.

Welcome to the me generation.
