Yeah, but you have to admit, the .357 magnum makes the .38 round feel
and sound like a pea shooter. I like to load my S&W 627 with
alternate rounds of .38s and 357 magnums. The great ammo shortage of
2013 seems to be slowly easing a bit and the prices at some places are
coming back down out of the stratosphere. I posted this link
before, but here it is again. I am shooting the 627 at the range
with alternate rounds. The first one is obviously a .38. Then the
357. Turn your sound up for full effect. :-)

.357 gives you a performance advantage over the .45 and 9mm.
10mm/.40 closed that gap.

I know, I've got one, a revolver. I guess if I lived down there I'd
want something that'd kill
pythons and boas on the first shot.

They usually use shotguns with bird shot (7 1/2 or 8)

It might be tough hitting a moving snake with a handgun. You really
don't want one of them to bite you. There is no venom but they do
have
a mouth full of backward facing teeth.

I've seen the pictures. Horrendous looking monster mouths. I'd want an
M-79 with a buckshot round.

A friend's wife recently received her LTC and was shopping for her
first gun. She wanted a revolver, so I let her try my little .38
Chief's Special thinking she'd like the size and light weight.
Nope. She wanted something bigger. She ended up buying a S&W
Governor that shoot's regular 45 rounds and also 410 bore shotgun
rounds.

I tried it out last week for the first time. Very nice. The 410
rounds are weird but I could see them as being good for snakes. They
have 3 large pellets and a bunch of smaller ones. Spread is
obviously dependent on range but up close ( 3 yards) it was about 3
inches.

Shot a "10" one afternoon at the range. Just bloody awful. Don't like
.40 S&W much, either. Do like the .357 mag in an S&W 27-2.

The 10mm can get you over 600 ft/lbs ME as will a .357
The 9mm, even in the +P loads are almost half that at around 360 and
the .45 +P squeaks out close to 500.

There used to be a big advantage in the bullets you could use in a
wheel gun but these days they have high performance bullets for SAs so
it just gets down to what you can load in the case and what SAAMI will
bless.

Wow...I could knock those empty sodapop cans over with more force!

Like John says, if you are just poking holes in paper or plinking
cans, maybe a .22 is more appropriate ... or maybe a BB gun.

They make some real nice CO2 guns these days and a lot of people like
Air Soft guns.
My dad made a BB gun range on the basement when I was about 10.
It used an old piece of carpet as a backstop with a stick of "K"
gutter under it that recycled the BBs quite well. They collected in a
bucket at the end.

Your error is in buying into Herring's explanation of why I buy or sell
anything. I stated I bought the .45 ACP revolver because I long wanted a
..45 double action revolver, not because I wanted to shoot it at the
range or use it as a carry weapon or even as a household defense weapon.

I have firearms more than adequate for paper and can plinking, including
a cherry Ruger Mark III with fancy wood grips, a sight rail and a red
dot sight I occasionally use.

You obviously bought the 45 to hunt varmints and other mammals.

That's the way my brother, the cop, got me shooting this revolver. Went out in the desert to a cop

Beautiful gun. You could take on an armored division with it. Why a .357?

John (Gun Nut) H.

Why not? It comes with a .38 recoil spring for lighter use!

It looks like an interesting piece. Back in the olden days the only
.38 class pistol you could get in 1911 types was the .38 super guns
and a specialized Smith that only shot wadcutters. Cartridge length
was a problem. It looks like they fixed that and beefed it up enough
to shoot .357.
I should make you a deal on a press and a set of .357/.38 dies.
I doubt I will ever load again.
I haven't even seen it for 30 years. It is packed away in a box since
I moved here.

Thanks but reloading isn't something I would consider until I retire and
have more free time.

Not a single can has survived. Only problem is it's as loud or louder
than my .22LR Ruger single 10 revolver because the exiting pellet is
supersonic and you get the "crack" as the sound barrier is breeched.

I bought it to shoot on my property without making any neighbors
nervous, but it's loud enough to probably catch their attention. No
complaints so far though.

I have a Sheridan 5mm pump air rifle that probably has a lower muzzle
velocity. With just a pump or two it's fairly quiet. It used to be my
mother's "squirrel rifle".

If you are really thinking about snakes, use #8s or even #9 skeet.
Those disk shot are meant for 2 legged snakes.

Luckily, we don't have those snakes up here - yet. When the global warming *really* kicks in that
