I do. I also remember that the french fries were cut on the premises
from real potatoes by a special slicer. Today, the fries are a "factory"
product that do not taste nearly as good. And back in the day, the meat
was meat, without ammonia.

In the northeast at around the same time there was an up and coming
small chain called Carrol's. A friend's dad was a distributor for them.
He started out because he was a potato broker and supplied them with
potatoes for fries. Every once in awhile he'd let us go for the day
delivering to the places, and we most of the managers would give us what
we wanted. Two 12 year old kids who had tons of energy could sure pack
away a lot of food!

Yep. Those were the days, old friend. And you were 6'4 1/2" tall. Oh my,
how things have changed.

Yup I remember when they opened the first McDonalds near me, across
the DC line (Southern Avenue) in Maryland.

The main reason they use "factory" french fries is that they are pre
cooked a little. To make decent fries, you really need to cook them
twice.
I think the reason fries don't taste as good is they don't cook them
in animal fat anymore.
Fries are the highest profit margin item in fast food, better than
coffee or soft drinks.

When I worked at Swift they were a vendor for McDonalds. Those 1.7 oz
burgers were real beef (no pink slime).

Did you ever get to the Little Tavern in DC? They had 10 cent burgers
and I think they were a lot better than McD. (similar to White Castle
for you mid west folks)

I vaguely recall getting burgers in the early 1970s from a little place
right off of M Street in Georgetown that I think was a Little Tavern.

It was old school fast food, nothing but a grille and a counter in a
little green roof building.
There was one next to the cut through in the 1700 block of Pa ave to G
street. I went by there every morning on my way to school and I
usually grabbed a burger or two.

There's a place in New Haven that's like that. Been there for
generations, more than 100 years, actually, called Louis Lunch.

I am sort of fond of Crystals in Florida, tiny but tasty burgers.

That is a lot nicer than a Little Tavern. They were all white and
green tile with a counter and not much else in a couple hundred square
foot nook of a building.,

I eat a Whopper at BK occasionally but that is usually the only fast
food I will eat.
All Burger Kings are not created equally tho. For some reason, some
make a better whopper than others.
I also have a pretty good eye for spotting the "dirty" ones. I spent a
lot of time behind those counters and some I would not even drink the
coffee from.
We had one particular Wendy's here we called the roach motel. I
wouldn't even let the guys bring used parts from there into the
office. I told them " Leave the old part in the dumpster and I will
fix the paperwork for the return".

I don't like the burger joints much. Around here, decent hot "fast" food
and freshly packed sandwiches, salads and fruit are available from a
chain operation called WaWa. Big, clean, well-lit stores with lots of
employees, good gasoline prices, nice food. They're putting local 7-11's
out of business. I saw a poster in a store recently that indicated the
chain was planning to open several stores in central Florida.

The problem with Little Tavern and Krispy Kreme is that they were on the way home from G'town
and Old Towne Alex.

Around these parts, we have Quick Trip, or QT for short. Same concept,
nice clean well lit stores. They all do a huge business!

Since they installed "pay at the pump" for gas, I go into one of those
"shop and rob" places less than once a year.
The last time was looking for "Mexican Coke" several years ago but
they have that everywhere now (Publix, Costco etc)

We go in all the time. Good friends with the owner, milk and bread is
the same price as parking a mile away, walking into a Stop and Shop
designed only to was as much time as possible as you work your way to
the very furthest corner to get a gallon of milk, then stand there
waiting for some idiot to make the self checkout work.... Gatoraide is 2
for 3 dollars, we grab at least two a day when we get our gas. Not to
mention, gas is cheaper if you go in and pay cash....
