One of the big issues is that the parents in "other" religions resent having their children surrounded by christian religious symbols. I think that's understandable. During grammar and junior high when I was growing up in New Haven, we had "holiday assemblies" at public school. They were "ecumenical." There were no such assemblies at my public high school. I don't recall if there were any holiday decorations on the public's "green" in the center of downtown or anywhere else. The majority populations at that time were Roman Catholic and Jewish, and there were plenty of "ecumenical" social events. During grammar and junior high, the local Catholic church, which was a few blocks from where we lived, had lots of afterschool activities under the watchful eye of nuns, and every kid, no matter his/her background, was welcomed. |
