A friend was telling me about a product review in 48 Degrees North magazine about a device to prevent accidental jibes. Something called shockles. Found their website, www.shockles.com. Anybody have any experience with these? Look like they might work? Thanks.

A friend brought his Catalina 42 down the west coast in heavy weather, using
a nylon preventer.

As it turned out, there was enough pressure on the boom at one point to
stretch out the nylon preventer as the boom went midships, then snapped back
forcefully and pulled up the traveler and forced him to put in for weeks of
repairs.

I expect that the "shockle" would have the same problem deployed as a
preventer. It's a great idea for lots of other places on a boat, but not as
a preventer (IMHO)

tieing the boom will not prevent a jibe, It will only prevent the boom
coming over.
Have you ever thought about what happens in windy conditions if a jibe
occurs and the main is on the wrong side because of the preventer?
It is not a good thing.

The boommaster should be considered, it makes the sail come over slowly if I
understand it correct.

A few months ago, I was sailing with my girlfriend Kim on a little Vanguard
420. It's my sister's boat and it was our first time sailing it. Kim moved,
switching sides while we headed downwind, and the shift was enough to cause
an accidental jibe. The boom flew over my head but it caught her in the face
and broke her nose.

Now she won't sail on a boat without a real cockpit. She calls the 420 the
"evil boat".

I think most sailors get hit with the boom once... only once.

I did on a pram when I was little, but that's another story.

It's a right of passage.

Some safety gizmo might lessen the blow, but it won't keep your ego untamed.

Excellent point. A controlled jibe is DEFINATELY the best solution. Anyone
have real experience with the Boomaster??
