This happened early Saturday morning.
Two boats slammed into each other in the Clear Lake channel around 1am
Saturday morning. The impact killed 56-year-old Stanley Barnes and injured
21-one-year Lacey Benton on one boat. Two men in the second boat were not
seriously hurt and managed to swim to shore.

Police hope to find clues among the wreckage of the two boats. They say
darkness strongly contributed to the accident. Investigators ordered
toxicology tests on the boaters to determine if alcohol also played a role.

Dark, speed too high for the conditions and booze?

I rarely go out boating at night anymore, for fear of being rammed by
some incompetent drunk running his boat at too high a speed for
prevailing conditions.

Licensing will help a little, that, mandatory liability insurance and
the tying together of boat and car insurance.
