So how does a decocker work?

It drops the hammer safely on a double action semi auto pistol to make
it more like a revolver on the first shot..

Most Glocks and guns that are inspired by them, don't leave the hammer
cocked after each shot and it is always double action.
The thought originally was it was an easier transition for cops that
had a six shooter all their life.

I guess you could call the striker "the hammer," in that they serve a
similar purpose. Still don't much like carry pistols or even defensive
pistols sans safeties or decockers. Even my Ruger 22, which fires rounds
via what might be called a massive moving striker, has a safety.

Stop being such an asshole. I had a minor problem with my Beretta

here, and I was told to bring the shotgun in for "adjustment." I left it
there and then came back after lunch. One other time, I had the factory
install a shock absorber system. That kind of service is not unusual for
manufacturers of quality guns. The only unusual part of it was that the
plant was local, and I didn't have to ship the shotgun to a service

It seems that two other manufacturers of firearms I own also offer

The assumption is if the striker/hammer is not left cocked after the
last shot, a safety is unnecessary and there is nothing for a de
cocker to decock

Your Ruger (Mk1?) leaves the striker cocked after a shot as did
virtually all SAs before the Glock.

A Glock pulls the striker back and slides a blocking bar out of the
way as you pull the trigger.

It's a Mark III. The problem with leaving the striker uncocked is that
all you have to do with that sort of pistol is pull the trigger to fire
it. Once you rack the slide on a Glock, the pistol will fire when you
pull the trigger and will fire repeatedly. Yes, that is how it is
supposed to work, but...I like the additional step of flicking the
safety off before firing a pistol.

=====

Don't know about the Ruger I but the Ruger III has an internal hammer
which is part of the trigger group. It is most definitely left cocked
after a shot, and as far as I know it has no double action mode.

Your Ruger (Mk1?) leaves the striker cocked after a shot as did
virtually all SAs before the Glock.

A Glock pulls the striker back and slides a blocking bar out of the
way as you pull the trigger.

I have a few snap caps in different calibers. I seldom use them.
I think most guns are safe dry firing but why take the chance of
breaking a firing pin? If you dry fire, it is good insurance.
You can make them by putting a little plug of nylon from an old
cutting board in the primer pocket of a fired case.

If you reload, making dummy rounds for function testing is easy, just
remember to drill a few holes in them so you know.

I really have little need to dry fire anyway. If you are just working
on your trigger pull, use a BB gun.

I have a couple CO2 guns that I use for keeping my pointing skill up.
One is a good match for my Ruger and the other is a clone of my
Woodsman.
When I was in Md I had a range in the basement. Most of the time I was
shooting the Woodsman. Now I use the CO2 model.
Now days the Air Soft guns are pretty popular. I doubt you could cause
much trouble with them anywhere. You do need a backstop for BBs.
I like an old piece of berber carpet over a 6" "K" (rain) gutter. Tilt
the gutter a little and the BBs all end up in a pile in the bottom
end. Blow them off and reuse them.

Good idea, the BB's. I don't have the book yet, so don't know what it says about dry firing. I
suppose one could always work on their trigger pull at the range, but it could get expensive.

Store the mags full in a safe place in your house, and at least a couple
of times a week, empty them out and refill them, and you'll soften the

Scott doesn't race.

Since when?

I got the impression you rode a bit but didn't race, and your daughter

races, correct?

You're too old and out of shape to be competitive, like me.

LOL... uh, no...

Yeah, because the ranks of competitive motorcycle racers are full of 50+

year old guys with heart conditions and cancer. I'll look for your name

among the winners at the Isle of Man TT.

Really harry, you don't ride, you don't matter....

You're *not* a competitive motorcycle racer. Period.

He'd consider himself doing good if he was considered useful raking mud on the track....or selling t-shirts to raise funds.

Of course not.. I ride and sometimes race to keep an understanding of
the mechanics of riding, hone my skills, and train my daughter. Although
I generally take the "backwards first", I (and my daughter) are known
for very technical form...

weekends last year we did nearly 1000 a day.. much of it going right
back to the kids.. What are you doing with your time don, posting to
usenet? That's hardly positive like helping kids...

Make up your mind. First, you imply you are not too old to be a
competitive racer, and then you agree, you are too old.

I ride, too, and have been riding off and on since college, when I owned
a used Honda "Dream," and then a used Honda SuperHawk. Before that, I
had use of a Lambretta motor scooter. I've had a half dozen or so
motorcycles over the years, including the one I have now.

When I had that first Honda, the "boys" out in Kansas with the
"spiffier," faster Brit bikes would "insult" my bike with its Japanese
cartoonish fenders, but that Dream had it all over the BSAs and Triumphs
because it would start the first time, every time, and it never left a
pool of oil on the ground where it was parked.

I like to watch motorcycle flat track racing once in a while, and when
the Isle of Man TT races are on TV, I watch some of them.

Now that's a low blow. Don't you remember how he fed the kid beer, gave
the kid a car, and paid his insurance. Now that's nurturing. The only
reason the kid moved out was that he was too embarrassed to bring girls
back to the hovel.
