The worst racist assholes I have ever met were in the DC area. Most
were cops. The only Klan meeting I ever actually knew about was in
southern PG county.

As a place to visit, it is hard to beat the mountains in southern
North Carolina.

We had a bunch of tourists on the local news earlier this week.
Some were from the Carolinas and some from Penn. They came up to
avoid the sweltering heat at home and were quite pleased with our more
moderate temperatures in the mid 70's F range.

I like coastal South Carolina.

--------------------------------------------------------------

My oldest son just moved his family from MA to Mount Pleasant, SC.

Beautiful place, within a few miles of the Isle of Palms Marina; one

of my stops when taking the Navigator south to Jupiter, FL.

He's been emailing pictures of several local marinas with slips for

sale. Seriously thinking of another boat down there in about a
year.

Just need to talk Mrs.E. out of her horses.

Mt. Pleasant is a nice place, and there are lots more all over the
state. The Lexington / Lake Murray area is one, and in the upstate
the Greenville / Spartanburg area is nice. Almost no one from SC goes
to Myrtle Beach, however. Tourist trap. Hilton Head is the upscale
beach destination here. Edisto Island is a quieter, family kind of
beach.

We'll be on the water in Charleston in about 24 hours. I'll wave in
your son's general direction. Did he move down for Boeing?

-------------------------------------------

Nope. He moved down because he got sick of Massachusetts. He and his
wife lived together for a year or so while he was
in the Navy, stationed down there. They loved it. Plus, he suffers
from severe asthma and there's something up here in
MA that constantly triggers it. He has far fewer and milder attacks
down there.

They have two girls aged 13 and 8. A year ago his wife had twins, one
girl, one boy. So, he has his hands full now at 39 years old.

I am looking forward to taking a trip down there this fall and scope
out the marinas and boats.
Mrs.E. is finally starting to agree that we don't need a place as
large as we have up here in MA.

Mount Pleasant is a great place. If you son doesn't know about it,
tell
him to go to The Wreck of the Richard and Charlene, or as the
locals
call it, The Wreck. There is no sign on the place, but once you
find
it,
it's the best seafood in all of Charleston.

-------------------------------------

I think you mentioned "The Wreck" in an earlier post and I
mentioned
it in
an e-mail to my son. He knows exactly where it is and is going to
try it
(may have already).

They just moved down there in early July. He's been scouting the
area
out and so far they love it. A little hot, but they'll get used
to
it.

Wonder where that Larry guy from either Savanagh or Charlston is
these
days He was an old navy type who had loads of info on the Carolinas

Larry...forgot about him. I have an email addy for him somewhere, but
I
don't know if it is still a good addy. He doesn't seem to post in
rec.boats.cruising anymore but, then, hardly anyone does. Larry live
along the river in Charleston.
-----------------------------------------------------

Is Larry the guy who rebuilt vintage Merc outboards or something?
I remember someone who seemed to have parts for almost anything
from the 40's or 50's. This was back when rec.boats was a boating
newsgroup, of course.

Move the horses down there with you & the wife.

Our potential move will be based on the end of her love affair with
those 1200 lb animals that have reached the end of their evolutionary
cycle and purpose on this planet.

Good luck with that. I had a sister who loved horses also. She was
afraid of heights so wouldn't crawl up on one but still ended up
owning a 'rescue horse' that she kept in a neighbours barn.

They could have just gone West 50-100 miles. It was beautiful in the

mountains in July. High 70s in the day, mid 60s at night.

Yup. The Blue Ridge Mountains are a close, easy getaway from the heat when we want a break. But the lake works too!

Larry wasn't the Merc guy. Larry repaired and serviced Hammond

It was another guy ... started with a "C" that had the old Mercs.

No, different guy. Larry was the guy who maintained church organs and
had what appeared to me to be a good handle on things mechanical and
electrical, especially as related to boats. He also was a huge
conspiracy freak, but he was funny and a good story teller.

Did you know Howie Vidal at Amity, btw? He was related to Gore, who died
the other day.

Drawing a blank. I seem to remember a girl ... Evie Vidal .... but
she was 2 or 3 years
behind me ... closer to my sister's age and class.

I only attended Amity for one year .... when I attended that is ....
