Since we are on the subject of clothing I was wondering what type of
shirts are best for warm weather paddling(or cold weather as a first
layer). I recently went on a warm weather trip and wore a cotton
T-shirt and that was a big mistake. I have some old capilene shirts
but they are black and I was worried I would get too hot. I was
thinking something like this:

http://www.rei.com/online/store/Prod...S_CLOTHING_TOC

It's polyester with a 15+ SPF rating and comes in light colors.

The shorts arrived yesterday. I liked them a lot so I ordered another pair.
My wife liked them too so we ordered a woman's version for her. The link to

d.. Two side pockets ? one with a handy key clip
e.. Hidden key pocket
f.. Welt pockets with covered zippers
g.. Same quality, better price: was $26
h.. Special Pricing
Versatile Water Shorts made of "smart fabric."
This morning you're going for a hike. Then it's off to the
beach. Next, settle in for a picnic. Think you'll find time to change your
clothes? You won't have to ? if you're wearing these Water Shorts.

They're fairly amazing, starting with the fabric. The 4-ply 100%
nylon fabric resists water and dries quickly. It even blocks 96% of the
sun's harmful UV rays, so the fun can last a little longer.

The Shorts have a zip fly, snap front, elastic waist and web
belt. But there's mo light and comfortable, these Shorts have hidden
features that add comfort and convenience. Take the pockets: not only do you
have two side pockets, but we've added a key clip inside the right pocket in
case you want to wade without worrying about your keys. Three more handy
welt pockets (two on the side, one in back) have covered zippers. And there
is also a sealable inside key pocket. Plus a mesh liner of 100% polyester.
5" inseam. Machine wash. Imported.

The LandsEnd pair has a 1" wide cloth belt with a Fastex style buckle which
more secure and is just as comfortable as a drawstring. They also have
zippered pockets on the side instead of just on the hip so you don't have to
sit all day on whatever you want to keep secured. There's also a short
cloth strap sewn into the right front pocket with a plastic snap attached so
that you can hook your car keys to it. All this for $19.50 instead of
$29.00 for the EMS pair.

Dude, we're arguing about shorts.

I'm a big fan of EMS techwick stuff (yes, I work there, so I own a lot of
their stuff) and wear it paddling. UPF 30+ fabric and comfy as hell.

Can anyone tell me where to find a good pair of shorts for swimming or
paddling that have pockets that zip closed? I can not find any except

with
velcro and they do not really close securely.

I've worn the short sleeve version of this REI shirt for lots of
hiking, backpacking, and rafting. Love it, much better than cotton
T-shirts. Lightweight, dries fast, keeps you cool when hot and warm
when cool. Machine wash and dry with all the rest of your stuff,
doesn't "pill", looks like new after 14 months of alternating between
two shirts worn almost every weekend. So far, hasn't adopted any
peculiar odors.

I bought the "nickel" color, a compromise between white (cooler) and
showing too much dirt.

Doesn't patagonia sell something similar called
SilkWeight capilene?

Yes. I haven't bought Capilene in years, but thought it
didn't work very well after the chemical coating wore off,
or something. Maybe it's improved now.

Like Rex with his MTS, I have been inordinately happy with
my L.L.Bean Polartec Power Dry shirt. They say it's rated #1
for comfort and moisture-wicking performance. It dries fast.
Unfortunately color selection is boring this season, orange
and gray being the only warm-weather choices.

One thing you definitely want to avoid is Coolmax, which
(even in new versions) feels clammy and dries slowly.
