One thing you should consider is that high powered binoculars are very
difficult to use from a moving platform. You can't hold them steady
enough to get a clear image. Overall, optics in the 6x-7x range are
brighter and more useful on the water.

Rather than binoculars, take a look at monoculars. For a given price,
you get better optics, lighter weight and a smaller package. They're
designed for one hand use, which can be important in a kayak. Brunton
makes a good 6x monocular that's waterproof, rubber armored and has
excellent optics.

Maybe floatability is more important than waterproof....

Waterproof binocs are made bouyant by attaching a neck strap that has a foam
float built into it. They can be purchased at places like West Marine or
Boaters World. The foam makes the neck strap very comfortable. It is also
possible to make your own.
