Default Favorite Islands

Just about everone who boats has a favorite island or two. How about
everone listing some of theirs, along with some high points?

I'll start:

Northeast: Block Island and Martha's Vineyard. Both are convenient
to Long Island Sound and the NY/CT metro areas. Both have great
scenery and well protected harbors. Both have good fishing and
supplies.

Caribbean: St Martin's, Antigua and Martinique - all for slightly
different reasons but all have good harbors, scenery, beaches and
ambience.

Castaway Cay...great harbor, scenery, beaches, ambience, and super food!

I have no doubt that people go to Castaway Cay and have a great time.
Disney is very good at what they do. What bothers me is that a
company like Disney buys an island, takes it private, changes the
name to something cutesy and American, excludes the natives and
everyone other than a Disney customer, builds a minature Disney World,
and calls it the Bahamas. It's not even close to being the Bahamas
except for some of the scenery.

They do provide employment for a bunch of folks from Abaco.

That's a good thing. Bahamians need all the employment opportunities
that they can get. Otherwise they'd have to go fishing all day. :-)

That would be a bummer!

Not trying to be a political ass, but it is what it is.

This is a news group about boats and boating. Boating requires a
certain amount of disposable income. If that bothers you for some
reason, you are in the wrong place.

What bothered me was the tone of your "I can afford a better place
than that Disney pap" response to John. Why belittle his experience
with that island? You started the thread, then take people to task for
making their offering.

============

You need to read my response again because something seems to have
been lost in translation. John had a great time there, other people
have a great time there, but any resemblance to the real Bahamas is
purely coincidental. It is probably possible to go other places in
the Bahamas for less money but without the sanitized Disney ambience.

I don't think you limited your question to 'favorite Bahama islands'. Having been on many of the
Bahama Islands, I can say that Castaway Cay has *very little* resemblance to any of the other
islands in the Bahamas.

Having spent three weeks thereon, I can also say that Great Egg Island is probably the most
miserable friggin' island in the Bahamas.
