The spam is a result of posting to the newsgroups using your real e-mail
address. I posted a car for sale on alt.autos yesterday and used my
alternate e-mail address. I received 50 spam messages supposedly from
Microsoft. I am using a Macintosh G-4 which means Microsoft would have
no reason to send me anything.

The address shown on this message is my alternate address. I change the
number in the address ever month to a different digit in a random order.

Baloney. This is yet another worm that mines addresses from infected
machine's address books. You just have to be unfortunate enough to be
in the address book of someone who got infected.

fwiw, people tell me the've seen my fake address in spams, right next to
other folks from a newsgroup. if my address is fake, has never worked,
etc, i'd say it was likely that the lists get processed down from usenet
one way or another.

You're right, some of it is from newsgroups in addition to the address
book mining.
