Trim/tilt problem
 

Looking at my 90 hp yamaha and the service manual, I find that I may
be low on hydraulic fluid. I have looked all over the manual and
cannot find what fluid to use although looking on the web I do find
that Yamaha sells a fluid just for this purpose. The manual says to
use ATF Dexron II to lube seals on it and many people say you can use
Dexron II.
If stuck in the "up" position, one can use a release valve on the
starboard side recessed in a hole with a screwdriver slot to release
the hydraulic pressure keeping it up. Then, you prob have just enough
hydraulic pressure for trim and tilt and it will go all the way back
up very slowly.

This probably is anathema to a guy like you, but...

....it pays to be friendly with the parts managers and service writers at
outboard dealerships, and to buy some parts or supplies there, too.

By doing so, you get to ask questions and get (usually) the right
answers and advice. This was true at the two dealerships I frequented in
Florida, and it is true at the outboard dealership I frequented up here.
While waiting my turn for supplies or the service writer, I often
witnessed expert advice being handed out for the asking.

If it were my outboard, I'd use Yamalube Performance Power Trim & Tilt
Fluid.

Have you checked to see if your tilt pin is binding. While you are
checking that,you might as well check the pivot pin.

I suppose in retrospect it does make sense. When the piston is fully
extended all of the oil is in the piston and there is none left for
the controller.

Pssst, you probably don't know this but Hydraulic fluid and ATF are very
closely related.
