Default Law on the high seas

Just out of curiosity, if you shot pirates for real, coming at your boat
with loaded weapons and you just brought out the 9mm, AK-47 or
M16...wasted them in international waters.

Can you be arrested and the charges stick?

If you don't happen to be in international waters when you shoot them,
I'd suggest sailing to international waters before calling the
authorities.

the way the coast guard defines it is, they have jurisdication over an
american flagged vessel anywhere in the world

and over any vessel in US waters

so if you are an american flagged vessel in international water, the
coast guard will enforce US maritime law

Then if charged, self defense should work.
