Default improperly installed radar reflectors

On my recent trip, I was amazed at how many of the octohedral type
radar reflectors (corner cube type) I saw installed incorrectly. Most
were installed with one of the planes parallel to the water which
produces much less of a radar return than the correct position, the so-
called "catch rain" position. In the correct position, one vertex is
facing up as if oriented to catch rain. It requires three points of
contact on the reflector to mount it this way but these three go to a
single loop to be hoisted or held up in some way.
Permanent mounts can orient it the right way for zero heel but when
heeled it gives less return. I like to have mine ready to hoist (in
fog or at night) with a line coming from it to the deck for bringing
it back down. I use a heavy fishing weight on the bottom to keep it in
the correct orientation when heeled and to keep from blowing around
too much.
