When I shift from reverse into neutral with the engine running I have no
problem. But when I try to shift from foward into neutral with the engine running, it's a chore. If I turn the motor off first, it slides into netral easy. Any ideas. I have a 1989 Johnson GT 175. DM |

DM Your outboard has a shift interupt switch on the stb. side where the shift cable connects to the lever on the motor. It is designed to "kill" the stb. 3 cylinders when you shift out of gear to "unload" the lugs where the clutch dog engages either forward or reverse gear. It may be fautly, corroded, broken, etc. It is easitly replaced by removing the lower motor pan for access. You can test it with an ohmmeter just like any other type of momentary switch. Some engines had a diode in the switch wiring harness that can be "blown" open and give the same symptoms. If you do it yourself, refer to the proper service manual for exact specs and procedures.
