I've been out on my cousins 24' Harris pontoon this afternoon.
Launched at Vincennes Indiana and took the Wabash north. The river is absolutely beautiful.and flows at about 5 mi per hr this time of year. We went about 22 mi. North on the river and looked at the fish eagles hanging around int he trees. It's not a sanctuary, but here's a large group of them that have settled in one specific area for some reason. Fishing must be good for them I suppose. the 60 hp. Suzuki 4 stroke pushed the pontoon with plenty of power to spare and sipped fuel at the same time. I'm Jealous. Anyhow we minorly rammed a sand bar (purposely) so his kids could get off and do some looking around for mussel shells and what-not. Shoes are required (or should be) on these sand bars due to fish hooks and broken beer bottles. Also a good break to heat ups some casserole on his coleman gas grill. after some lunch and doing some digging around with the kids, it was time to head back. It seems that pontoons were made for the river. Anyhow, a good time was had by all. And it's supposed to be hot this week, and If all goes right I'll take my barge over there next weekend. Y'all ought to do that more often. Life is too short to be bickering in here. |

Bob it seems that the pontoons are really -pretty versatile in places like that and rivers due to the fact of their stability, room and because they don't have a lot of draft they can safely sneak into places I wouldn't want to take an I/O or Inboard. Especially the Wabash. When the level changes drastically like due to heavy rains up north which can cause the river to rise a couple feet, it seems there s always something floating down, like tree limbs or even logs. And when the river really floods out in the spring, you find some real nasties like an occasional propane tank from somebody's cabin. But I haven't seen any dead animals in a while. anyhow, I've seen people take their I/O's out there when the river was low and it's not uncommon for somebody having to be towed back in due to losing a prop or worse. Y'all ought to do that more often. Life is too short to be bickering in here. 'tis true... Yeah! Sun 'n fun is much better. Good therepy too! |

They would camp and the thing would fly. They were very careful not to get caught out in harsh weather with it though, guess it's really not so good in the snot. -- OH, I could do the 105 footer, but I would hate to waste the last few seconds of my life with my eyes closed, screaming like a little girl... ![]() That;s one thing I like about the barge I have. Gobs of room and with an air mattress and sleeping bag, you can camp out on it easy enough. One thing about the cooler nights in the early fall when it gets down to possibly dipping into the 50's, you dont' have to worry much about mosquitoes. But I'd agree that a pontoon is more of a fair weather craft. Even as big as mine is, I dont' think I'd want to be caught out on Carlyle when the wind is up and theres 3 + ft.rs capping. It's bad enough in a v-hull. |
