I could have hired a good carpenter to make it wider during this latest project, but the expense would have been substantial. Such a project is way beyond my rudimentary carpentry skills. The sliders were a problem, since the widest opening they would allow was less than 30". But now, with these double opening doors, I can pull both open at the same time. Well, you're right about pricing. But there are ways to save money and get something better than "more expensive." A pricier set of doors I looked at were fiberglass on the outside over an oak core. The oak showed on the inside. I saved a few hundred by buying fiberglass outside and inside, over a pine core. The fiberglass has a "permanent" finish, but can be painted if you want. The window panels are the same, and the frame on the inside that holds them in is wood, finished in the same color as the fiberglass. Not having to paint doors is a plus to me. I'll try to get the trim painted in the next few days, but we want to go out fishing on Sunday. One of our favorite spots in the Bay is producing pretty good results. |

Scary was when I put in the Andersen Frenchwood door and my wife said she wanted the track an inch lower. I ended up taking my brand new track to the table saw, Ripped off the whole bottom of it and just installed the actual runner strip. Then I had to make the doors an inch and a half taller to match the hole. Fortunately we have a lot of red oak I put in and I had some wood to work with. It really came out pretty well but it was scary for a while. When her door guys came over to install the Windoor corner sliders (I was not going to tackle that one) they looked at the Anderson and were really confused until I told them what we did. Well, you are well beyond my home carpentry ability and bravery! |

Took just a tiny shim on one side to level left to right. Concrete floor was perfectly flat. Built-in locks lined up perfectly, as did the deadbolt. looks great. Now, if any wacko doper shows up at your door, you'll have plenty of time to plan their speedy withdrawal. You guys must be members of the "internet badass club". Two of the little ****s who post here have threatened to show up at my door to "teach me a lesson," or some such nonsense. I've told both of them that if either shows up and attempts to break in and gets one foot across the threshold, my assumption will be they are committing a home invasion, and they'll be leaving in a body bag. Is there a bag limit on short guys with long greasy hair? Scary stuff! Unfortunately, you are a documented liar. |

Dickless, sterile, wife afraid of the outcome? |

It was pretty scary for me... Getting the old door out was much more difficult, involving j mold and a pneumatic cut-off saw and my fear factor. Hey, spoofer, tell us more about that alleged "perfectly level" concrete.... |

Interesting... looks like they could have been wider? Or was there some structural issue? The 60" opening could have been made wider when the house was built. Guess who sits on that little footstool... meow! When I built a new cape Cod style house back in 1975/76 I installed 5' wide sliding doors. It was plenty wide to pass through.... but some of the fat assed dopers might struggle a bit. I try my best not to discuss Fat Asses, and I wish you wouldn't, it just gets the dopers into a feeding frenzy talking about the photo I took at del Coronado Spoofer alert! That photo I took just showed my hand. It was swollen from water weight gain. It was that time of the month. |
