It may be backward thinking in the 21st century but I bet more than half of the parents agree with the policy. The scouts are struggling to survive and they simply reflect the values of their target demographic. Public funding is a separate issue but the government funds a lot of things we find unacceptable on some level. A lot of people think churches should pay taxes. The recent document dump says we are funding the Taliban. Do the boy scouts have a policy against child molesters? I suspect what they want to prevent is child molestation, and that sort of activity typically is not the kind of "fun" gay men prefer. I can just hear the right-wing trash exclaim after some molester is arrested for buggering Boy Scouts, "Well, at least he wasn't gay." Doesn't the fact that a man pursues other males of any age make them gay? I do understand the difference between consenting adults and children but the perception is still out there. Personally I do not have an opinion on this but I do understand what other people think. Would you care at all if the BSA was not taking public funds? 1. No, it doesn't. BS. Of course it does. 2. ...and using public facilities... I don't subscribe to the Rand Paul view of allowing private organizations to discriminate on the basis of race. More BS. BSoA is not discriminating based on race. There are troops in this area that have black, white, and hispanic members. And, they do not receive any direct government funding. They are non-profit, private organization. |
