Default new ignition switch

as y'all know, i replaced a starter in my boat, started it from the
upper helm station and promptly destroyed the starter. tim helped me
understand the starter switch is probably staying engaged and keeping
the bendix in the flywheel.

so i need to replace this switch. getting it out is no problem. the
problem is, what am i looking for? can i get a 1 for 1 replacement? if
not, what should i be looking for? i dont have a wiring diagram for
the switch so am flying blind. any help would be appreciated.

Get the best marine switch you can afford with a rain cover over the key
opening. off-on-(momentary)start is all you need unless you have an aux wire
and think you need an aux position.

i have 2 helm stations. the one below, protected...haven't checked the
wiring on the old switch.

We had a switch stick on our Turbocraft[hull number ten, of the first
batch of jet boats ever sold in the US] once. It trashed the starter.
Unfortunately the Graymarine six had the flywheel on the wrong end and
starters were scarce. It had a crank nut on the front of the flywheel,
so we went to a junkyard and got a crank.

It's possible that a Chris Craft starter would have worked, that is if
it was the same bolt patern. But if it was a top loader, and if you
had access to an international Harvester dealership, they probably had
most of the parts to repair the starter.


But that was then and this is now.

couple of weeks to get it. It started on the first kick, every time.
Flywheel was on opposite end from the driveshaft.That is, on the
front.

I can understand the flywheel on the frontside of the boat for
clearance, but I'm suprised they didn't do what chris craft did and
take the engine and put the flywheel in the font of the block making
the starter bolt in standard position yet turn for a CCW application.

The driveshaft [yes driveshaft, complete with a U-joint] bolted

The driveshaft [yes driveshaft, complete with a U-joint] bolted
directly to the back of the crankshaft.

OK, I can understand that part, but I don't see how you could uses a
standard buick starter if the frywheel was on the front of the engine
because a buick (pad mount since 1963) has bolted to the engine block
at the back of the engine. Unless I'm really missing something here.

The engine was a 109 HP Graymarine flathead six. It has been fifty
years and I could be wrong about the Buick part. Mayby someone rebuilt
the one we had, it is hard to remember that far back.
