at the shore
 

well, a great 4 days at the jersey shore on the 26' tollycraft.

it's an old, old boat i purchased last year, so going over the engine
bit by bit. put in new exhaust line, and installed new water hoses
this weekend. burned up a 30 year old bilge pump so put in a new 750
gph rule. ran the engine at 2800 rpm for about 15 minutes to get it
to temp with no problems at all...until the starter burned up!

too lazy to change that right now, so took sat evening and sunday off
to enjoy the GREAT weather, the stunning women and the good food at
the shore...

someday i'll get the boat underway...but it's still a great hobby!

Where are you generally off that shore? We sure like the Cape May area
for beaches, boating, eating (!), and sight-seeing.

Starter probably didn't "burn up" but is badly corroded inside. What
kind of engine is it and what starter? Delco? Prestolite?

yeah i thought that might be it. it's a merccruiser 255 engine;
starter and solenoid were, literally, hot enough to boil water.
previous owner has a replacement solenoid on board, but i didn't want
to replace it until i pulled the starter to test if it's bad.

i imagine marine starters are different than auto starters...not sure
which components are different...

Well, for one they're sealed for no spark. Doesn't help with heat
dissipation.

You're likely looking at a rebuild or replacement.

Was it hot from just starting or is there any potential the starter
didn't disengage from the flywheel after ignition? That'd certainly
heat things up.

i think it was from failure to disengage. took the solenoid with
it...from the reading ive done, looks like it's shimmed in place so i
have to play with THAT feature as well.
