Google Maps for Cell Phones...

Saw a live demo of Google Maps for cell phones yesterday, including
demos of most of the features on this Google page:

http://www.google.com/mobile/maps/

Pretty damned slick, and to me, at least, a lot more useful than the
dash-mounted GPS-only devices. Apparently at the moment the mapping
programs are more developed and more featured on the "Android" based
cell phones, as opposed to the iPhone cell phones.

Might be enough to motivate me to trade up my flip phone to an Android
phone. :)

You are just finding out about this? You are behind the technology curve
again.

My BB has had this capability for a couple of years.

I never claimed I was up to speed on cell phone technology. When I
fiddled with the iPhones up at the Annapolis Apple store, I didn't
encounter this particular GPS technology. Personally, I've used nothing
but Motorola or LG "flipphones" for years.

BlackBerry has a flip-phone.

Technology is not you strong suit, you should stick to berating
conservatives.

How nice...blackberry has a flip phone. Gee.

The iPhone has a built-in app that pretty much does this... not quite, but
it works pretty well.

Yeah, I'm sure it does, among the 1,000,000 apps!

I've only played around with iPhones at the Apple store, because AT&T
cell phone coverage in my area...sucks. So I've never considered buying one.

My current cell provider has some Android OS phones that seem pretty nifty.

Judy's BB Storm has a great mapping ap. We were playing with it when
we were driving around back in the National Forest area between Squaw
Valley and Donner Pass along the Truckee river. Between that and the
compass I carry, we managed to find our way out

I'm intrigued enough by the GPS/Mapping apps alone that I think I'll
"retire" my aging LG flip phone and pick up one of these new Android OS
phones. There's a new one that just came out called "The Incredible"
that seems to have some other interesting features, too.

No Apple iPhone for me. Nice phone, but the AT&T cell coverage around
here is not so good.

I have Verizon's android phone and the GPS features using Google
navigation are very well implemented. They have a car mount that
automatically initiates "car" mode, including maps, navigation, access
to your contacts, etc. I use my contacts file to input destinations
before leaving the house. Very useful.

But you have to pay extra to use your BB to navigate. Android uses
free Google service.

I opted for the Android and save $30 a month in BB mail service.
Android mail apps have a ways to go but they're close enough now. I
didn't think the nav service was worth $10 a month so I never had it.
