Google Maps for Cell Phones...

Saw a live demo of Google Maps for cell phones yesterday, including
demos of most of the features on this Google page:

http://www.google.com/mobile/maps/

Pretty damned slick, and to me, at least, a lot more useful than the
dash-mounted GPS-only devices. Apparently at the moment the mapping
programs are more developed and more featured on the "Android" based
cell phones, as opposed to the iPhone cell phones.

Might be enough to motivate me to trade up my flip phone to an Android
phone. :)

You are just finding out about this? You are behind the technology curve
again.

My BB has had this capability for a couple of years.

I never claimed I was up to speed on cell phone technology. When I
fiddled with the iPhones up at the Annapolis Apple store, I didn't
encounter this particular GPS technology. Personally, I've used nothing
but Motorola or LG "flipphones" for years.

Yeah, I'm sure it does, among the 1,000,000 apps!

I've only played around with iPhones at the Apple store, because AT&T
cell phone coverage in my area...sucks. So I've never considered buying one.

My current cell provider has some Android OS phones that seem pretty nifty.

Judy's BB Storm has a great mapping ap. We were playing with it when

I have Verizon's android phone and the GPS features using Google
navigation are very well implemented. They have a car mount that
automatically initiates "car" mode, including maps, navigation, access
to your contacts, etc. I use my contacts file to input destinations
before leaving the house. Very useful.

I opted for the Android and save $30 a month in BB mail service.
Android mail apps have a ways to go but they're close enough now. I
didn't think the nav service was worth $10 a month so I never had it.

Android/Google Navigation is equal to most of the GPS units I've seen

We originally planned our trip based on flying out of Reno, then at
the last minute my wife's (MIA) old friend from the flower biz popped
up in LaJolla so we switched our flight to LAX and drove one of the
days we were going to spend at Tahoe. We were running out of things to
do anyway. We are hikers and that area is not as hiker friendly as the
areas around Kings Canyon/Sequoia or even Mammoth. We really should
have blown off Squaw Valley and stayed in Mammoth. ... but I would
have never seen Carson City ... wheee!
The Squaw Valley resort is nice tho.
Our vacations are usually pretty much "free form" anyway. We seldom
follow the plan

Squaw is nice... kinda commercial for skiing, but not bad. I don't really do
downhill any more... cross country is more interesting.

I opted for the Android and save $30 a month in BB mail service.
Android mail apps have a ways to go but they're close enough now. I
didn't think the nav service was worth $10 a month so I never had it.

For the iPhone, perhaps for others, you can get TomTom as an app.
It's $100
and I don't really need it, but it talks to you just like the regular
TomTom.

Android/Google Navigation is equal to most of the GPS units I've seen
and way better resolution. It's better integrated than my outlook
email app, which I'm hoping takes a step forward soon.

I ordered a 'Droid "Incredible" from Verizon. Should be here this week.

Wow!

You are behind the technology

My BB has had this capability for a couple of years.

But you have to pay extra to use your BB to navigate. Android uses
free Google service.

TomTom is a crappy GPS. I have been in cars with them and they miss turns
by a block or more. I'll stick with Garmin or my OEM version.

That's not been my experience.

Who said you are/were? He clearly said school. No one said you
graduated from college. If you were a lawyer it would have been obvious
to you but you are incapable of reading for content so that would
exclude you from many occupations. Your confusion is expected.
