Largest Legal Sturgeon! April 7 at Rio Vista, Calif.
 

I headed to the delta again for three days of fishing and stayed at
Delta Marina's RV Park on the Sacramento River in Rio Vista,
Kalifornistan.

The only event worth mentioning all three days is that my friend
Willie joined me for some sturgeon fishing on Wednesday, and contrary
to my boat rules (I'm supposed to catch the biggest and the first fish
every time) he must have gotten tired of waiting on me. All of a
sudden he set the hook into something mighty big and the fight was on!

After about 15 minutes the monster bellied up next to the boat and we
brought him aboard for a close measure - and he measured 66 inches!
Another bit more and he'd have been let go, but Willie took him home.
I tried the rest of the day after we loaded the sturgeon into his
pickup and he headed home to clean it.

That was the only action for me the whole three days - and I ain't
complaining!

Did Willie smoke him? How else can you prepare them? Do recreational
fishermen harvest the roe?

What a fish! Those things must not have changed much in the last 50 million
years or so, they do look prehistoric.

Larry, Willie tried to smoke him, but they're pretty damp and hard to
keep lit. heh heh. Well, actually smoking is a very popular way to
prepare 'em, but Willie just fries 'em in butter. He and his nephew
steak the fish out. I guess barbecuing is popular, too. I seldom eat
them myself and haven't cleaned one in years. But I'm getting the
hankering to keep one soon, so maybe the next big 'un I get I'll take
home.

bones, much like good tasting shark.

There are farm raised sturgeon. Where restaurants get their legal fish
from.

I've been to that site. Farm raised fish is never as good as the "free
range" variety. Tilapia should be outlawed. It's nasty stuff.
