Need new prop strut

Once hauled for painting, turns out my 30 yr old sailboat needs a new
prop strut. Old one had finally corroded enough that it cracked. I
sorta suspected this as I had looked at it when I dove on it last
year. 30 years I s'pose is not too bad except it was good for so many
years. It only seemed to go bad at the dock I have been at the last 5
years where I had to replace zincs every 4 months.
So, having one made from stainless. I was hesitant about stainless
but they say they use it on many boats. Thoughts?

1. Anyone who goes out in that maintenance-neglected boat of yours is
taking his/her life in his/her hands.

2. Perhaps since you and your boat seem to be aging and deteriorating at
the same pace, you should sell the dying hulk (the boat, not your body)
and buy a younger, less sagging model of sailboat, perhaps a smaller
one, with simpler and fewer systems that won't have fallen apart between
your visits to your slip or halfway out of the harbor.

Seriously, you might like a Flicka 20, a stout little cruiser
and...trailerable, and several have made transAtlantic voyages.

It must have taken all of your boating knowldege to come up with that
answer. What were you saying about trashing threads?

Stainless is fine, if properly welded.
Unlike cast bronze, it is easily repaired if the need arises.
Arbitration has now recessed.

Maybe these guys could offer some tips.

On a 30 yr old boat, you expect some things like this. Even if the
strut broke, the shaft could not go anywhere but would probably
exhibit some balance problems. So you shut the engine down and use
sails. I have had the fore hatch replaced, replaced all the standing
(wire) rigging (truly expensive), running rigging (dacron rope),
lifelines, all instruments twice, new sails, new lighting. After this
trip, I will prob need to replace the two opening windows. The
gelcoat died many years ago and nothing brings it back. It chalks
like crazy in spite of heavy polishing. It will need painting but I
am loathe to do so because most paint jobs I have seen eventually got
worse than the dead gelcoat. I MIGHT try the System 3 WR155paint I
used on my Tolman because it seems tough although it is not glossy.
