Prototyped it into a racing engine, and was blowing Mercury away.

It's a shame they didn't have the time and finances to really develop
it.

They made Evenrude snowmobiles with the Wankle. My dad had the 35 hp model
and they made a 45 hp model. I think they were way underated for
Horsepower.

Well I think somebody did put it into production in small 10 h. models,
but i wonder why it never caught on? and went the way of the NSU and
Mazda?

Even Yamaha and Suzuki tried them in motorcycles and they dropped as
soon as they were introduced, it seems.

Pretty much for the same reasons you don't see two-stroke motorcycles
anymore, fuel consumption and emissions.

Yeah, but the two strokes are soooooo much more fun;)

Scotty

They were sort of a two stroke, in you mixed the oil. What was more fun
about a 2 stroke. Lots of power, and the snowmobile had fantastic
acceleration and speed.

I always heard the weakness was the rotor seals

thjey eventually got great rotor tip seals. end seals were not a problem.
Emissions were the worst part. Wankel engineer talked to my engineering
class at San Francisco State and said all the changes for emissions reduced
the power and mileage lots.

The old "pre-emission controls" two strokes were fun. The new ones,
overly complex and not so much fun. And the stench of that modern two
stroke oil...phew.

My Arctic Cat was the 35hp version. Again, lots of torque and low end
performance.

I think that R&D could have developed the engine design into being
qite a contender ...eventually. But it would have taken too long for
market etc, and with the newer technology advances, somebody could
probably still do something with it and make it effective.

The evenrude machine had the continously variable transmission system, so
lots of omph through all the range.
