The American Red Cross is involved now. They always need help with
contributions when they help out in these large disasters. Your heart
has to go out to Haitians; one damned disaster after another.

How ironic, though, that the other side of the Island has all the nice
things, and the money.

MSNBC is saying it might even be 5 times that (~500k).

Disasters in 3d world countries are always bad because they don't have
building codes or the resources to respond to disasters like this.
The building code issue should be a wake up call for the US too. We
have lots of fault lines in the US that are NOT in California. Most of
the US lives with a building code that assumes all loads are going to
be straight down. From a Florida perspective, it is why I am not
shocked when a little dust devil (they call a tornado) goes through
the Mid Atlantic states and rips their houses up. An earthquake that
would not even make a Californian look out the window, would destroy a
large number of buildings in Memphis and St Louis (The New Madrid
zone)

The problem is that Haiti doesn't have the infrastructure to do anything
to help the people who are still alive but needing assistance. More
people will die in the days after the event. And, as we have seen in the
past with Haiti the Haitians cannot be trusted to fairly distribute the
aide they receive.

Of course, he's a smart conservative who understands what needs to be
done when it counts. Mayor Nagin and ex-Governor Blanco could learn a
lot from this guy.

Unbelievable that the citizens of NO put Nagin back into office. NO,
corrupt to the end. At least the state threw Blanco out and put
Jindal, a conservative, in as Governor. Unlike Blanco I'll bet he'll
be able to ask for federal assistance in a proper, timely manner. Can
probably slap some sense into Nagin as well. Use those damn buses!

it into town.

They are sending a bunch of military people there to try to maintain
some similance of order. I hope that doesn't get ugly. That always
scares me. This could degrade to another Baghdad real fast

The looting may be a problem, but Haiti is not a Muslim country, so it
shouldn't turn into another Baghdad.

I would like to have seen a bunch of C-17s with bucket loaders and
dump trucks aboard. It looks like that's what's needed right now,
along with water and food of course.

More Brian Williams and Anderson Coopers are not the solution, that's
for damn sure. I'm sure Geraldo Rivera and Amanpour are right behind.
Wonder when Olberman will show up.

Well, we know you're certainly not going to show up... doubtful you'll make
a financial contribution either. I'm sure you have limited means, but even a
dollar or three would help.

The leaders of Haiti are smarter than the leaders of NOLA were. Plus
there's no pesky federal law concerning state's rights to be obeyed by
the feds in this case.

Oh, yes, you can tell by their stringent building codes, their
excellent work in getting their economy back on track, their work on
keeping crime in check and their work in erradicating AIDS.

That's mainly driven by lack of money, which of course has nothing to
do their intelligence or the speed of getting aid from the US in this
disaster. Of course, you knew that.

The US offered, and the Haiti leaders immediately accepted. The NOLA
leaders did not, and failed to follow the guidelines that would
*allow* the feds to even come into the state quickly. With all the
money, technology, communications, and modern transportation
advantages that that the NOLA leaders enjoyed, the fact that they
screwed it up so bad is criminal. Nagin and Blanco belong in federal
prison.

Sorry harold, I've never stated or implied that I'm rich. Unlike some
others, I feel no need to attempt to impress people on usenet with
fabulous stories of wealth or adventure. I'm just a guy with a boat.
