Smashed anti-whaling superboat sinks in Antarctic: activists

(AFP) – 3 hours ago

SYDNEY — A high-tech anti-whaling powerboat that was badly damaged in a
collision with Japanese fishermen sank overnight after salvage attempts
failed, activists said on Friday.

The super-fast "Ady Gil" trimaran, which had its front end sheared off
in the smash, was being taken to an Antarctic port when the tow line
snapped, Peter Hammarstedt, first officer of the "Bob Barker" ship, told
AFP.

"The Ady Gil was taking on too much water, it became too heavy on the
tow. More and more of the vessel was under water," he said.

"It was determined it would be only two to three hours before it was
fully submerged. At this point unfortunately the Ady Gil is on the
bottom of the Southern Ocean."

The Bob Barker, which was towing the Ady Gil, has now rejoined the hunt
for Japanese whalers along with the "Steve Irwin", another protest ship
operated by the Hollywood-backed Sea Shepherd group.

The Ady Gil, a sleek, carbon-and-kevlar trimaran, was capable of speeds
up to 50 knots (57 miles/93 kilometres per hour) and claimed the
round-the-world record in 2008 under its former name, "Earthrace".

Freaking darwins had it coming. Now if I remember my boating correctly,
the capitain of the smaller boat should be charged with endangerment and
failing to yeild.

Green nuts. I wonder if they had their boat insured? Hope not.

Thats a shame too. it seemed like a more than state-of-the-art craft.

But it seems that they stuck out their nose to spite their face.

Sorry it went down.

So you approve of the Asians fishing out the oceans for pure profit?
It figures. They drag the bottom, and take everything when net
fishing. The Japs dont give a **** about anything. They eat
anything......
I guess your mentality would be " I'm old, so I wont have to worry
about ****ing up the worlds Oceans, cause I'm not going to live that

The bigger you are the more right of way you have.

My favorite is the idiot blow boaters on the Chesapeake who believe that
they have the right of way when they cross the bow of an oil tanker or
container ship heading into Baltimore. The blow boater may have the
right away but the 750' long ship doesn't have breaks and can't turn out
of the channel.

The ships bringing the paper rolls up to the Washington Post plant just
north of Alexandria on the Potomac River figured out that it was much
easier to transit the river at high tide during the hours when it was
dark. Fewer idiots on the river at that time of day.

I tend to agree. If they are endangering another vessel engaged in a
lawful activity they are just pirates.
Sea Shepherd can petition the world court to stop whaling but as long
as it is legal, this vigilante harassment is piracy. The Japanese navy
would be justified if they provided escorts and engaged the pirates
with deadly force. They did pass an anti-piracy bill in march that
allows them to fire on pirates harassing Japanese flagged ships. (in
response to Somali pirates).

What nation's flag is the Sea Shepard org flying under this year?
