How close would any duck hunter reasonably get to a group of ducks?

what???????
Actually quite close if they use what is called a Nova Scotia Tolling
Retriever.

Almost had the wife talked into getting one of those dogs when she
started shopping around 4 years ago...instead she decided on another
Springer Spaniel.
Now the Springer is giving me a hard time about travelling in the
cargo area of our RAV4. Vet thinks a companion dog might help.
Seems crazy to take a chance of doubling your trouble by getting
another dog.

And your vet just happens to know of a spare dog, I bet!

None of our cats likes to go for a ride in the car, probably because the
only place they ever get to go is to the vet for their annual physical.

You don't want a cat smelling up your car anyway.
