Ike wanted to covertly arrange a friendly government like he had done

Johnson who wanted a war

I don't really think LBJ wanted a war. I think he was sucked into it by
the allure of the anti-communism tone, and then later by the generals. He
was terribly troubled by the toll it was taking on our soldiers, but
didn't do enough to bring it to an end.

LBJ cause a huge toll on our soldiers. Him and his defense secretary
micromanaging.

He and his defense secretary... whatever. Yes, but the biggest toll was
continually escalating.

Especially in a war in countries where there was no reason for us to be
out there killing.

That part of it -the killing- probably turned on losers like herring and
flajim.

LBJ suffered from inflated ego and hubris.

McNamara thought he could conduct a war with a calculator.

Plus he made millions from the war. Lady Birds investments did well. LBJ
was near bankrupt when he took over as President and left 4 years later with
$4 million net worth. When a million was a lot.
