There are more KKK people in Indiana and Ohio than in Mississippi.
They don't segregate lunch counters, they segregate whole communities.
You have white areas and black areas. The most racist people I know
are northern big city cops.

I think I would peg the racism in northern police departments to the
60s riots although there were still plenty of racist cops before that.
Those riots changed white flight into white panic in the suburbs and
started the middle class gated community movement

Cicero, Illinois, the home of Al Capone, was closed to
african-americans until the early 1980's, if I remember correctly.
