OKLAHOMA CITY -- Only one in four Oklahoma public high school students can name the first President of the United States, according to a survey released today. The survey was commissioned by the Oklahoma Council of Public Affairs in observance of Constitution Day on Thursday. Brandon Dutcher is with the conservative think tank and said the group wanted to find out how much civic knowledge Oklahoma high school students know. The Oklahoma City-based think tank enlisted national research firm, Strategic Vision, to access students' basic civic knowledge. "They're questions taken from the actual exam that you have to take to become a U.S. citizen," Dutcher said. A thousand students were given 10 questions drawn from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services item bank. Candidates for U.S. citizenship must answer six questions correctly in order to become citizens. About 92 percent of the people who take the citizenship test pass on their first try, according to immigration service data. However, Oklahoma students did not fare as well. Only about 3 percent of the students surveyed would have passed the citizenship test. Dutcher said this is not just a problem in Oklahoma. He said Arizona had similar results, which left him concerned for the entire country. "Jefferson later said that a nation can't expect to be ignorant and free," Dutcher said. "It points to a real serious problem. We're not going to remain ignorant and free." jps the racist is so immersed in hatred that he cannot see reason. What's racist in pointing out that Oklahoma is giving their students a **** poor education? Did you actually read the article or did your knee jerk up to the keyboard and start typing? You live (as in stew) in southern Alabama and you think you're in a position to judge racism? You and your neighbors are burdened with prejudice that goes back generations. Most of our righties here (and, in fact, elsewhere) have strong opinions that were formed in fact-free zones. |

just plain snipped Are you pleased that Oklahoma is doing such a poor job of educating students? I have been hearing this story for 50 years. "US Americans" always seem to suck on the citizenship test. I've seen several street interviews who question passersby about things like geography. Some of their answers to simple questions are hilarious! And, these were mostly adults. FYI, it's "WE Americans" unless you were talking about U. S. American's vs. Americans north or south of the border. Sorry, I'll put my grammer hat back in the corner. -- Nom=de=Plume |

Do you have anything to add to the article? Are you pleased that Oklahoma is doing such a poor job of educating students? What do you suppose the percentage of high school graduates can spell secession or succession in Oklahoma? They don't know who the first president of the United States is but they voted more emphatically for GW Bush than any other state? Care to treat us to a lesson in correlation and causation? Care to treat us to anything but petulant drivel??? Your funny quip about me graduating in Oklahoma didn't answer any of my questions. This feels just like the time you queried me about my insurance coverage for my employees but then never responded with anything resembling intelligence. Are you just a bunch of hi falutin' werds with no basic edumacation? |

I suppose, JPS, that I could make a similar accusation about your desultory remonstration after I exhorted you to stifle the propaganda. It just may be, however, that you don't know the meaning of the word "cessation." I'll give you the benefit of the doubt, though. -- Posted via NewsDemon.com - Premium Uncensored Newsgroup Service -------http://www.NewsDemon.com------ Unlimited Access, Anonymous Accounts, Uncensored Broadband Access |

Ever been to Oklahoma? I have, but not for many years. One of my newspaper buddies was offered a hell of a promotion to take a job with the Tulsa paper, and I used to visit him a couple times a year. It was a long drive, and other than to catch up with my buddy, not worth it. Backwards would have been a kind way to describe it...it was sort of the South Carolina of the southwest. Apparently it still is. Friend lasted about years there, and then hopped over to the St. Louis P-D. Much more better in those days. -- Birther-Deather-Tenther-Teabagger: Idiots All |
