I want one of those smart trickle chargers so when I bring my boat back in,
I can just plug in a two prong fitting and have my batteries (2 12v.) topped
off and kept topped off. IIRC, these are an amp or less, and are about $35.
I want the kind that cannot overcharge. Am I in the ballpark? Brand name
suggestions.

$35 won't do it. You need a dual charger. I have a smart charger from
Walmart. Will not boil the battery and will charge to 35 amps. Was about
$70. Will only do one battery at a time.

It is really not a good idea to try to charge 2 batteries at the same
time. One may end up getting charged and the other goes flat.
You could do some kind of trick with a plug in timer and a relay that
alternates between them 12 hours each.

There are chargers with multiple outputs. The technology has come a long
way in the past several years.

I use a solar panel to maintain my batteries. It won't charge them if
one is low, but it will maintain the charge.
